There is y there are: cómo decir hay en inglés

There is y there are equivalen a «hay» en inglés: there is va con un sustantivo singular o incontable (There is a bank near here, hay un banco cerca) y there are con un plural (There are two banks, hay dos bancos). A diferencia del español, que usa siempre «hay», en inglés el verbo cambia según lo que viene detrás, y en pasado pasa lo mismo con there was y there were.

  • En la negativa se añade not: there isn't, there aren't; también there's no y there are no + sustantivo.
  • En las preguntas se invierte el orden: Is there...?, Are there...? Las respuestas cortas son Yes, there is / No, there aren't.
  • En pasado, «había» o «hubo» es there was (singular) o there were (plural).

Vocabulario

InglésPronunciaciónEspañol
there /ðɛr/ ahí, allí (y la palabra de there is / there are)
there's /ðɛrz/ hay (contracción de there is)

Qué significan there is y there are

There is a book on the table. Hay un libro en la mesa.
There are two books on the table. Hay dos libros en la mesa.
There is some water in the bottle. Hay agua en la botella.
There are a lot of people here. Aquí hay mucha gente.

La palabra there no significa aquí «allí»: es un sujeto vacío, como el it de it’s raining, que el inglés necesita porque toda frase debe tener sujeto. Por eso puedes decir There’s a bank there (allí hay un banco), con dos there que hacen cosas distintas.

There is con singular e incontables

Usa there is con dos tipos de sustantivo:

  1. Singular contable

, casi siempre con a o an: There is a cat in the garden (hay un gato en el jardín), There’s an email for you (hay un correo para ti).

  2. Incontable

, sin a/an: There is coffee in the kitchen (hay café en la cocina), There’s a lot of noise (hay mucho ruido).

There is: ejemplos
Inglés Español
There’s a supermarket near my house. Hay un supermercado cerca de mi casa.
There’s an old man at the door. Hay un señor mayor en la puerta.
There’s some bread on the counter. Hay pan en la encimera / el mesón.
There’s no information about the trip. No hay información sobre el viaje.
There’s a lot of furniture in this room.

There are con plural

Usa there are con sustantivos en plural, incluidos los números y las cantidades: There are three bedrooms (hay tres dormitorios), There are some problems (hay algunos problemas).

There are: ejemplos
Inglés Español
There are two bathrooms in the apartment. Hay dos baños en el apartamento / piso.
There are a lot of tourists in summer. En verano hay muchos turistas.
There are some kids in the park. Hay unos niños en el parque.
There are twelve months in a year. Un año tiene doce meses.
There are many people in line. Hay mucha gente en la fila / cola.

Fíjate en la cuarta fila: en español a veces decimos «tiene» donde el inglés prefiere there are. Y en la última: people es plural en inglés (people are), aunque «gente» sea singular en español.

There are casi no se contrae al escribir. Al hablar suena muy rápido, algo como /ðɛr ɚ/, y a veces verás there’re en textos informales, pero en un examen escribe siempre there are.

¿Y si hay una lista?

Cuando enumeras varias cosas, el verbo concuerda con la primera: There’s a sofa, two chairs and a TV (hay un sofá, dos sillas y una tele). Con el plural primero: There are two chairs and a sofa. Al hablar, los nativos usan there’s incluso delante de plurales (There’s two chairs), pero en un examen y por escrito respeta la concordancia.

Negativas y preguntas

Negativa

Para negar se añade not después de is o are. Lo normal es contraer: there isn’t y there aren’t. Con plurales e incontables suele ir any.

Forma negativa
Inglés Contracción Español
There is not a gym in the hotel. There isn’t a gym in the hotel. No hay gimnasio en el hotel.
There is not any sugar. There isn’t any sugar. No hay azúcar.
There are not any buses at night. There aren’t any buses at night. No hay autobuses por la noche.

Otra forma muy frecuente es there’s no / there are no + sustantivo, con el verbo en afirmativa: There’s no sugar (no hay azúcar), There are no buses at night.

Preguntas y respuestas cortas

Para preguntar, is o are va delante de there: Is there…?, Are there…? Las respuestas cortas repiten there + el verbo.

Preguntas con there is y there are
Inglés Español
Is there a bathroom here? — Yes, there is. ¿Hay un baño aquí? — Sí, hay.
Is there any coffee? — No, there isn’t. ¿Hay café? — No, no hay.
Are there any vegetarian dishes? — Yes, there are. ¿Hay platos vegetarianos? — Sí, hay.
Are there any seats left? — No, there aren’t. ¿Quedan asientos? — No, no quedan.
How many students are there? ¿Cuántos alumnos hay?
How much milk is there? ¿Cuánta leche hay?

Las preguntas con how many (plurales) y how much (incontables) terminan en are there o is there. Tienes más detalles en much y many.

There was y there were

Para el pasado, is pasa a was y are pasa a were, como en el pasado de to be. Equivalen a «había» y a «hubo».

There was y there were
Inglés Español
There was a party at Ana’s house. Hubo una fiesta en casa de Ana.
There was a lot of snow last winter. El invierno pasado hubo mucha nieve.
There were thirty people at the meeting. En la reunión había treinta personas.
There wasn’t any wifi in the hotel. En el hotel no había wifi.
There weren’t any taxis at the station. No había taxis en la estación.
Was there a problem? — Yes, there was. ¿Hubo algún problema? — Sí.
Were there many people? — No, there weren’t. ¿Había mucha gente? — No.

  • Futuro: There will be a test on Friday. (Habrá un examen el viernes.) There’s going to be a storm. (Va a haber una tormenta.)
  • Present perfect: There has been an accident. (Ha habido / Hubo un accidente.) There have been some changes. (Ha habido algunos cambios.)
  • Con modales: There might be a problem. (Puede que haya un problema.) There must be a mistake. (Debe de haber un error.)

There is/are con some, any y a lot of

Palabras de cantidad con there is y there are
Palabra Cuándo Ejemplo
some afirmativas There are some apples. (Hay unas manzanas / algunas manzanas.)
any negativas y preguntas Are there any apples? (¿Hay manzanas?)
no negativa con verbo afirmativo There are no apples. (No hay manzanas.)
a lot of afirmativas (y a veces preguntas) There’s a lot of rice.
There aren’t many shops. (No hay muchas tiendas.)
much incontables, en negativas y preguntas There isn’t much time. (No hay mucho tiempo.)

En español muchas veces no ponemos nada («hay manzanas», «¿hay pan?»), pero en inglés lo natural es añadir some o any. Some también aparece en ofrecimientos y peticiones: Is there some coffee left? cuando esperas que sí. La explicación completa está en some y any.

Hay o está: there is frente a it is

There’s a bank on the corner.
El banco está en la esquina. The bank is on the corner.
¿Hay un hospital cerca? Is there a hospital near here?
¿Dónde está el hospital? Where is the hospital?
Hay unas llaves en la mesa. ¿Son tuyas? There are some keys on the table. Are they yours?

La regla práctica: con a/an, some, números o nada delante del sustantivo (algo nuevo), usa there is/are. Con the, my, this o un nombre propio (algo ya conocido), usa el sujeto + be: My phone is in my bag (mi celular / móvil está en mi bolso), no There is my phone in my bag.

Para decir dónde están las cosas te harán falta las preposiciones de lugar: in, on, under, next to, between. Y fíjate en la última fila de la tabla: después de presentar algo con there are, la siguiente frase ya usa they.

Tampoco confundas «hay» con «hace» en expresiones de tiempo: «hace calor» es it’s hot, y «hace dos años» es two years ago. Ninguna lleva there.

Cuando tengas clara la regla, practica con los ejercicios de there is y there are, que incluyen también there was y there were.

Escribe o elige la respuesta y pulsa Comprobar. Las soluciones están debajo de cada pregunta.

  1. a pharmacy on this street.

Hay una farmacia en esta calle.

    Ver solución

There is A pharmacy es singular, así que «hay» se dice there is. It is significaría «es / está» y no sirve para decir que algo existe.

  2. (hay) twenty students in my class.

Hay veinte alumnos en mi clase.

    Ver solución

There are Twenty students es plural, por eso es there are, no there is.

  3. There a lot of traffic today.

    Hoy hay mucho tráfico.

    Ver solución

is Traffic es incontable y los incontables van con there is, aunque delante haya a lot of.

  4. There (not / be) any milk in the fridge.

isn't Milk es incontable: negativa con there isn't + any. También es correcto there's not.

  5. Ordena: there / an / near / ATM / is / here

¿Hay un cajero cerca de aquí?

    Ver solución

Is there an ATM near here En la pregunta el verbo va delante: Is there...?

  6. Are there any hotels in the town? — Yes, .

¿Hay hoteles en el pueblo? — Sí, hay.

    Ver solución

there are La respuesta corta repite there + el verbo, sin contraer: Yes, there are. They are significaría «ellos son / están».

  7. When I was a kid, there (be) a big park behind my house.

  8. There many people at the concert last night.

  9. How many bedrooms there in your apartment?

are How many va con un plural (bedrooms), así que la pregunta es How many... are there?

  10. Corrige el error en «Have a lot of restaurants in my city»: a lot of restaurants in my city.

Hay muchos restaurantes en mi ciudad.

    Ver solución

There are «Hay» no se traduce con have. Restaurants es plural, por eso es There are.

  11. Sorry, there no tickets left for Saturday.
