Preguntar qué tiempo hace: What’s the weather like?
La pregunta más habitual para saber qué tiempo hace en inglés es What’s the weather like? No traduzcas palabra por palabra el español: en inglés no se pregunta qué tiempo «hace» con make ni con do.
| Inglés | Español |
|---|---|
| What’s the weather like today? | ¿Qué tiempo hace hoy? |
| How’s the weather in Lima? | ¿Qué tal el tiempo en Lima? |
| What’s the weather going to be like tomorrow? | ¿Qué tiempo va a hacer mañana? |
| What’s the temperature? | ¿Qué temperatura hace? |
| Is it cold outside? | ¿Hace frío afuera / fuera? |
| What’s the forecast for the weekend? |
Para responder se usa casi siempre it’s (it is) + adjetivo: It’s sunny (hace sol), It’s hot (hace calor), It’s 20 degrees (hace 20 grados).
| Sustantivo | Adjetivo | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| sun (sol) | sunny | It’s sunny and warm. (Hace sol y una temperatura agradable.) |
| rain (lluvia) | rainy | It was a rainy day. (Fue un día lluvioso.) |
| cloud (nube) | cloudy | It’s cloudy this morning. (Está nublado esta mañana.) |
| wind (viento) | windy | It’s really windy at the beach. (Hace mucho viento en la playa.) |
| snow (nieve) | snowy | We had a snowy winter. (Tuvimos un invierno con mucha nieve.) |
| fog (niebla) | foggy | Drive carefully, it’s foggy. (Conduce / Maneja con cuidado, hay niebla.) |
| storm (tormenta) | stormy | The sea is stormy today. (El mar está revuelto hoy.) |
Bajo cero se dice minus o below zero: It’s minus five o It’s five below zero.
|---|---|
| a thunderstorm | una tormenta eléctrica |
| thunder and lightning | truenos y relámpagos |
| a shower | un chubasco, un chaparrón |
| drizzle | llovizna |
| hail / sleet | granizo / aguanieve |
Weather, climate y time
| Palabra | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| weather | el tiempo de hoy o de unos días | The weather is terrible today. (Hoy hace un tiempo horrible.) |
| time | el tiempo del reloj o la duración | I don’t have time. (No tengo tiempo.) |
Se dice nice weather o the weather, nunca ✗ a nice weather.
