Another y other (others, the other): diferencias
Another y other significan «otro», pero no se usan igual: another va con un sustantivo singular (another coffee, otro café) y other con plural o incontable (other people, otras personas). Others y the others son pronombres, nunca van delante de un sustantivo, y «el uno al otro» se dice each other.

En resumen
- Another = an + other: va con un sustantivo contable en singular (another day, otro día) y nunca lleva a, an ni the delante.
- Other va con plurales e incontables (other books, other information) y con singulares solo si lleva delante the, my, some, any, etc. (the other book).
- Other es adjetivo y no lleva -s: ✓ other people, ✗ others people.
- «Se miran», «se ayudan» (acción recíproca) se dicen con each other: They help each other. Themselves sería «a sí mismos».
- «Otra vez» es again; «algo más», something else; «otros dos», another two o two more.

|---|---|---|---|
| another | contable singular | I’d like another coffee. | Quiero otro café. |
| other | plural o incontable | I have other plans. | Tengo otros planes. |
| the other | singular o plural concreto | the other door, the other students | la otra puerta, los otros alumnos |
| others | solo (pronombre) | Some agree; others don’t. | Unos están de acuerdo; otros no. |

Another + singular
Another es an + other escrito junto.
|---|---|
| Can I have another cookie? | ¿Me das otra galleta? (una más) |
| We stayed another night in Cusco. | Nos quedamos otra noche en Cusco. |
| This shirt is too small. Do you have another one? | Esta camisa me queda chica / pequeña. ¿Tiene otra? (una distinta) |
| Let’s talk about it another time. | Hablemos de eso en otro momento. |
| I don’t like this hotel. Let’s find another. | No me gusta este hotel. Busquemos otro. |
Como muestra el último ejemplo, another también puede ir solo, como pronombre, o seguido de one: another one.
La excepción: another + número + plural
Con un número o con few, another sí acepta un plural, porque el grupo se ve como una sola cantidad: another two weeks (dos semanas más), another few minutes (unos minutos más). Es lo mismo que decir two more weeks.
| Inglés | Español |
|---|---|
| We need another three volunteers. | Necesitamos otros tres voluntarios / tres voluntarios más. |
| The trip takes another 20 minutes. | El viaje dura otros 20 minutos. |
Other + plural o incontable
Va delante de sustantivos plurales (other countries) o incontables (other information, other music).
| Inglés | Español |
|---|---|
| Other students finished early. | Otros alumnos terminaron pronto. |
| She has lived in other countries. | Ha vivido en otros países. |
| Do you have any other questions? | ¿Tienen alguna otra pregunta? |
| We need other information. | Necesitamos otra información. |
Other + singular solo con determinante
Other puede ir con un sustantivo singular, pero solo si tiene delante un determinante: the, my, your, some, any, no, one, every.
| Inglés | Español |
|---|---|
| My other car is in the garage. |
| Call me some other day. | Llámame algún otro día. |
| There’s one other problem. | Hay otro problema más. |
| I go to the gym every other day.
Others y the others
|---|---|
| Some people work from home; others go to the office. |
| This song is good, but I prefer the others. |
| Juan is here. The others are on their way. | Juan ya está aquí. Los demás vienen en camino. |
| Be kind to others. | Sé amable con los demás. |
Si quieres usar un sustantivo, quita la -s: the others → the other guests; others → other guests. También puedes decir the other ones.
The other: el otro de dos
Cuando solo hay dos elementos, el segundo es the other (o the other one). Con más de dos, el último que queda también es the other, y los que quedan son the others.
| Inglés | Español |
|---|---|
| I have two brothers. One is a doctor and the other is a teacher. | Tengo dos hermanos. Uno es médico y el otro, profesor. |
| Hold the bag with the other hand. | Sujeta la bolsa con la otra mano. |
| On the one hand it’s cheap; on the other hand, it’s far. |
|---|---|
| They looked at each other. | Se miraron (el uno al otro). |
| They looked at themselves in the mirror. |
| We call each other every Sunday. | Nos llamamos todos los domingos. |
| Do you two know each other? | ¿Ustedes dos se conocen? / ¿Vosotros dos os conocéis? |
| They borrow each other’s clothes. |
One another significa lo mismo.
|---|---|---|
| otra vez | ✗ other time | again |
| en otra ocasión | ✗ in other occasion | another time, some other time |
| otro más | ✗ other more | one more, another one |
| otros dos | ✗ others two | another two, two more |
| los otros dos | ✗ the others two | the other two |
| algo más | ✗ other thing | something else / anything else |
| nadie más | ✗ nobody other | nobody else |
| el otro día | ✗ another day | the other day |
| cada dos días | — | every other day |
Else significa «más» o «otro» detrás de palabras como something, anybody, nowhere, what, who: What else do you need?
